FAQ
- May I use this in my project? You can use any images created in this generator royalty free. Attribution would be great, but is not a requirement.
- Why does the clear/random button do nothing? You need to click and hold - this is to avoid accidentally overwriting any edits. If it still doesn't work you can always delete orbits from settings and randomize by pressing ctrl+Enter.
- Why can't I see the orbit I just changed? Try setting the eccentricity to 0 or zooming out.
- Why are eccentric orbits like that? I never took calculus, so I'm pretty sure I got the math wrong. Keep eccentric orbits below 0.2 or above 1.1 for best results.
- How do I avoid orbits overlapping? Increase the distance of the larger overlapping orbit. For highly eccentric orbits though, there is nothing you can do.
- Why is there a straight vertical line over my screen? You have an orbit somewhere with an eccentricity of 3 or higher. Eccentricity should remain below 3 and ideally below 2.
- Is there any way to save between sessions? Not at the moment, but you can download your creation as an SVG or PNG.
- Can you add...? Probably! Leave a comment and if your idea is good, I'll add it as a feature.
Disclaimer #1: This is an early build! You may experience bugs.
Disclaimer #2: These systems are not realistic. Don't expect them to be, don't use them like they are. This is not a simulation.

Can u make an exe/dmg version of this program? It doesn’t work for some reason online but I haven’t tried online year
hi! i am using this for my sci-fi ttrpg sessions and i found it extremely useful, great work! i'd really like to see further updates, and if i can ask for the addition of Asteroid belts and rings on planet? for now i'm using overlapping dotted and segmented lines with a host size of 1, but an option that can let us adjust the "thickness" of a orbit would be nice.
Thank you again!
Thanks for your suggestion! I've added ringed planets as a unique host-shape. As for asteroid belts: It's a request that's come up before, but I'm still thinking of the best way to implement them.
Two things to note though: You can delete hosts with the trash can icon, which is a bit cleaner than setting their sizes to 1. You can also adjust the line width of all orbits in the settings menu (though you can't further adjust the individual orbit thickness other than selecting their shape)
I just found and I approve
amazing tool!! what if there could be an exporter/importer for the orbitals using the JPL orbitals.json format. This could be really cool to integrate with visualizations and tools both interactive and static.
P.S. I use that json format for this: https://stellarcartography.org/sta-sol/2389/6.884881182163395/0.6793112860161443/-0.16983180042427648
That sounds very interesting! Would you be able to link to some official documentation for that format?
This is awesome, thank you!
This solar system generator has been such a boon to creating simple and effective sci-fi maps. This is my most recent exercise, building over the base with Affinity, and fx using Photomosh:
I love this! Thanks for sharing! I'm glad you are getting good use out of it
could we get dark mode pls <3
Agreed. Dark mode would be great!
For those finding this comment in 2026, dark mode has been added! Click the cog in the top right to access it.
This is genuinely terrific and looks so incredibly clean. Thank you for making this!
I wanted to report that both the SVG and PNG download buttons both create SVG files that are unconvertable.
Thanks for the bug report! I've fixed this issue in v0.2.1 which should be available now (here's the changelog).
thinking about this thing all the time as an astronomy enthusiast
This is great, it fills a niche I've been trying to fill for some time.
Absolutely amazing! This is the tool I needed for my galactic Grandpa's farm game!
Excellent generator! I can see it being very useful for Traveller, Rogue Trader and my 5 Parsecs from Home solo games. Thanks for making it!
This is FIRE! Love it! I'm working on a full galaxy sandbox in JS, with links to supplemental generators. Will definitely include this.
this is BRILLIANT stuff, man. Super easy to use, looks pretty slick, perfect tool.
This is really sick
Love this! It's already really nice, especially for folks who are used to doing a bit of post-processing. I could see myself creating something here and then crunching it up a bit in Affinity/Photoshop and then using it in a TTRPG adventure, for sure. Great work!
