2 More Planets!
Howdy!
I've just updated Exoplanet Index to include 2 new worlds: Artemisia and Mendelevir. I'm really happy with how these two turned out. Each one feels stronger than the last.
I'm going to be releasing more, hopefully at the end of April. With each release will come a devlog like this one.
Design and development goals
The goal of the Exoplanet Index project is to give sci-fi GMs more to work with. A lot of the current modern sci-fi rpg content exists as either random tables or uniquely themed adventures. Random tables struggle to generate completely unique concepts, and many modern adventures are designed specifically for mothership style horror. No hate on either, but we need something more!
This problem, I think, brings with it a design challenge. Should new locations be generic? Or should they have a specific theme? I'm aiming for a balance here. Each world, in my opinion, should be generic enough to include in just about any sci-fi setting, but include enough thematic elements for a GM to lean into if they want. Portrose for example would fit well in just about any sci-fi game, but would work even better in a space-opera setting where one could play up the rebellion as a backdrop for an epic story of love and war.
My test is Star Wars. Whenever I'm writing sci-fi content, I figure someone will eventually want to use it for a Star Wars game. It's inevitable! So I always ask myself, "Would this work in Star Wars?" Even though I'm probably not going to run star wars, if the answer is yes, it's usually a good sign. I'll ask this question about other games and settings too of course (Mothership, Starfinder, my own game Drier Deserts, Hotter Suns), but Star Wars remains my guiding light.
Hopefully, by the end of this, you'll have a lot more content for whatever kind of game you're hoping to play.
