I've had a few ideas bouncing around my head for what a supers RPG should look like. While I've wanted to play a supers game for ages now, pretty much every rule set I encountered felt way too cumbersome to actually play. In my mind, every super hero should be unique and immediately powerful right from the beginning. That wasn't what I was getting from most rules out there, which as "dreaded trad games" focused on balance and mechanical progression. Worst of all, many had lists of powers to choose from, which always felt like a massive middle finger to all the kids (myself included) who grew up crafting up their own heroes with wild powers. Don't get me wrong, there are some great games out there-- and many have influenced this game-- but none felt like anything I could bring to the table. POWER CANDY is therefore the result of my relative frustration with the superhero RPG genre in general.

This frustration has lead me to a couple of game design conclusions present in POWER CANDY. Heroes and their powers should be relatively free-form. Progression should either happen in the fiction or entire separate of it (off screen, editorial re-balancing, power creep). Combat needs to be creative and with as few numbers as possible. All of this and more are present in POWER CANDY.

Ultimately, this game is a bit of a side project. Quick and dirty ideas mashed together and explained with as little rules-lingo as possible. Writing a major update to DD/HS (my space RPG) has been slow and difficult. POWER CANDY is not that. I wrote the majority of the rules in the notes app on my phone while lying in bed. I hope you like it (even if it is a bit rough around the edges).
